This was the first championship game in the group stages for the ladies team and what a thriller it turned out to be. This game was a game of two halfs and came down to the wire in the remaining minutes of the game. Tinahely started out the much stronger team and dominated play in allmost all areas of the field and were also first to open the scoreline. Tinahely took control and with Lucy Mulhall Ciara Byrne Loretta Gilbert, Jackie Kinch, Claire O'Rourke and Laura Hogan all getting on the score sheet Tinahely looked confident and were dominating. Eire Og however did not ever seem to panic they played their own game and kept plucking at their scores when the opportunity came their way. Tinahely were leading 3-10 to 0-6 with seconds remaining in the first half and Eire Og worked the ball down quickly and Maeve Deenhy had one thing on her mind and knew a goal at this stage would be vital to the Eire Og team, the Tinahely defence worked hard and a great save by Caroline Dunne followed up with a block down from Deirdre Healy saw the Eire Og players panic for a score to shoot the ball wide. This was a vital time in the game as the next kick out was half time so the Tinahely side were on high going in at half time.
In the second half the remaining minutes of the first half drove Eire Og on and it was to be their time to dominate play now. Tinahely ladies could not seem to get their hands on the ball and keep possesion of the ball for any lenght which Eire Og capitalised on, they kept taking their points and eventually opened up the Tinahely defence and with a shot at goal the ball took a deflection which saw the ball go past Tinahely net minder Caroline Dunne. In quick succession another goal was scored which saw the gap being reducded to just 2 points. Eire Og at this stage had kept Tinahely scoreless and it was 15 minutes into the second half so Tinahely were desperate to get a score on the board but it did not seem to come with 2 free kicks and a couple of shots from play being waved wide Eire Og gained momentium and broke up the field once more to see a well worked goal in the back of the Tinahely net. With less than 10 minutes to go Eire og had another point on the board to move them 2 ahead, Jackie Kinch had claimed a ball from right under the Tinahely crossbar which was yet another vital point in the game, this ball was distributed well and worked very quickly up the field as Eire og had players forward looking for a goal to finish the Tinahely side but Tinahely knew this was the time to get their score when their defence was not at its tightess. The ball was put into the hand of Lucy Mulhall and she finished in style in the back of the net which saw Tinahely to reclaim their lead by just 1 point. The next kickout was vital which Jackie Kinch claimed and again found Mulhall and she poped it over the bar. Eire Og had one last chance to come down the field but with Tinahely having almost all players excluding the full forward line back to defend Eire Ogs last effort was waved wide and the final whistle was then blown. From the feedback we got from players and viewer it was a game relished for viewers with both excitement and good football but for the players it was physically draining and never want a match to be that close again :)! Well done ladies one victory and lets hope their will be two more to come from your group stages.
