It's
a great honour to welcome everyone who visits Tinahely GAA on the internet.
This website has many details of the club - its history, the players and our
supporters. Visitors can get up to date on match results, photos, events and
development of the club.
I would like to thank everybody who helped
put the website together, especially Kevin Nolan, Erin and Anthony Murphy. I
hope people enjoy logging on and looking back over the years since our
foundation.
The Club was established at a meeting at
the Billiard Hall, Dwyers Square, Tinahely on 8th December 1961. Jerry McGrath was
elected first Chairman, Des Morris Secretary and Frank Murphy Treasurer.
The Juvenile Section was founded in 1957
and there was a great 50th anniversary
commemoration . The founders were Des Morris, Martin Morris, Jim Whelan, the
late Michael Hassett and the late Jim Robinson. Tinahely GAA won the Under-12
Championship in 1972, U-14 Championship in 1974 and the Minor Championship in
1978, 1980 and 1982. Our aim is to have high football standards for each
underage team. They are a very important part of the development of our game.
The President of the GAA, Nickey Brennan,
officially opened our new clubhouse on Friday 27th June 2009 in the
presence of the County Board, local dignitaries and great crowd of people. It
was a historic day for Tinahely. We hope that the sporting community from the
area will make full use of these facilities.
An important role of the club is to promote
Gaelic culture and we wish to recognise those who have done so much for Irish
culture.
Many events are on the calendar during the
year. Regarding cultural events, the Club participates in Scór every year. Our annual dinner dance is
a major occasion and Brian Cody, Michéal Ó Muircheartaigh and Mick O'Dwyer were
recent guests of honour. No matter where people are in Tinahely, football is a
big talking point!
This year is a busy one and I wish to thank
my colleagues on the Committee for all their help. We thank the local media and
journalists for reporting our matches
Visit our website again for more updates on
the Club, especially our supporters who live away or are
abroad.
